Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until evenly mixed.
  3. Add wet ingredients: Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in boiling water: Gradually add the boiling water, mixing until the batter is smooth. It will be thin, but that’s okay!
  5. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. The cakes are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frost (optional): Frost with your favorite chocolate buttercream, or simply dust with powdered sugar. Serve and enjoy!
