Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Graham crackers for serving

Method

  1. Build a campfire and allow it to burn down until you have hot, glowing coals. Avoid cooking over large flames for better control.
  2. Place a cast iron skillet near the fire to warm slightly. Add butter and spread it evenly across the base and sides to prevent sticking.
  3. Add the chocolate chips to the skillet and spread them into an even layer so they melt smoothly.
  4. Scatter the mini marshmallows over the chocolate, covering most of the surface. Slight gaps are fine as they will expand during cooking.
  5. Place the skillet over the campfire on a grill grate or stable surface above the coals. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, rotating occasionally for even heat.
  6. Watch closely as the chocolate melts and the marshmallows soften and turn golden brown. Move the skillet away from direct flames if needed.
  7. Carefully remove the skillet from the fire using heat-safe gloves. Let it rest for 1 to 2 minutes.
  8. Serve immediately with graham crackers for dipping while the mixture is warm and gooey.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet for best results, as it holds heat well and cooks the dip evenly over the campfire.
  • Always cook over hot coals instead of direct flames to prevent the marshmallows from burning too quickly.
  • Rotate the skillet occasionally while cooking to ensure even melting and toasting.
  • Keep a close watch during cooking, as marshmallows can go from golden to burnt very fast.
  • If the top is browning too quickly, move the skillet to a cooler part of the fire.
  • Let the dip sit for 1 to 2 minutes after removing from the fire so the chocolate can settle slightly.
  • Serve immediately while warm and gooey for the best texture and flavor.
  • If the dip thickens too much, place it back near the heat for a short time to soften again.
  • You can double the recipe, but use a larger skillet to avoid uneven melting.
  • This recipe works best for outdoor cooking, but it can also be adapted to other heat sources if needed.
